Humana API Explorer

OVERVIEW

Pioneering Interoperability in Healthcare through an Enterprise API Marketplace

Humana’s API Explorer allows users to explore Humana’s broad portfolio of clinical, financial, operational, and patient experience products and solutions in a secure, simple, and scalable manner.

As a part of Humana’s Enterprise Architecture team, I led the UX/UI direction for Humana’s API Explorer, a curated enterprise API marketplace that provides both internal and third-party development teams secure access to the Humana data they need to build helpful tools and services for patients, providers, and more.

THE CHALLENGE

How can we make it easier for teams across the enterprise and beyond to discover and consume Humana’s data resources?

Interoperability is healthcare’s greatest technological challenge. Traditionally, healthcare data has been scattered across a fractured landscape of disparate systems that fail to communicate with each other in a cohesive manner. As a result, patients and physicians often have a difficult time accessing healthcare data effectively.

The Humana API Explorer aims to address this challenge by providing the tools, documentation, and community resources to enable application developers to easily discover and consume Humana’s healthcare data.

RESEARCH & DISCOVERY

Proto-Personas

To kick off this project, I facilitated a 1-hour proto-persona workshop with a cross-functional team comprised of architects, engineers, product managers, and leadership stakeholders to help define our target users and articulate their needs and pain points.

From this workshop, the team developed 3 provisional personas with which we were able to begin formulating our product strategy.

Comparative Assessment

To better inform our product strategy and identify design opportunities for our product, I conducted a comparative assessment of several existing API marketplace platforms. This included not only healthcare-centric API platforms, but also other API platforms our target users may be familiar with, such as PayPal’s developer portal and AT&T’s API Marketplace. These findings were summarized into a best practices guideline document, which highlighted the fundamental design standards we aimed to meet with our product.

Information Architecture

The platform is divided into two components: the product marketing layer and the web app experience. The sitemap below describes the information architecture for the product marketing layer.

Task Flows and Success Criteria

I created task flows and worked with our product team to define the user success criteria for the platform. Having these documents as a reference was helpful, as it helped our team plot the most likely scenarios and sequences our users will follow.

Static Comps

Using our sitemaps and task flows as a roadmap, I designed static comps for the entire interface. These comps were later reviewed and critiqued in a black hat session once they were completed.

Let's make something
awesome together.
